Shopping Guide to Chinatown Point in Singapore: Where to Find Fair Deals

My family has always loved Chinatown, but these days, we don’t just go for the traditional markets, shops, or famous hawker centres. Now, we find ourselves at Chinatown Point, where we enjoy air conditioning, food, and wallet-friendly shopping.

My dad swears by the socks he finds there, my mom adores the jewellery and fashion stores, and for me, it’s all about the food. This mall is a great place to escape the heat, browse, and eat to your heart’s content.

If you’re visiting for the first time, here’s a mall guide to help you make the most of it!

When it comes to finding the best home and living items, I turn to Nitori. The whole world may head to IKEA for affordable finds, but this Japanese store has pretty much all the things I need to make my home cosier and more functional.

The store offers furniture (that you can build and customise), home decor, storage, supplies, and even linen and clothing. I could spend hours just browsing here!

Tips:

  • If it’s your first time here, I recommend you bring your own shopping bag for smaller items. Do everything you can to prevent extra waste, but if you don’t have one, the store has some in stock for you. They might charge you for it though!
  • If you want to skip the wait, order online and pick up your items in-store. Your item will be ready in about a day and will be stored safely until you come to pick it up!

Decathlon

When it comes to sportswear and outdoor gear, Decathlon is my go-to. Thankfully, my parents frequent Chinatown Point, so whenever it’s time for my quarterly haul of activewear and hiking essentials, this is where I get them.

What makes this Decathlon branch unique is that it’s a dedicated pick-up point for online orders as well. The store itself is smaller, but if you’ve placed an order online, you can swing by to grab your gear hassle-free.

You’re also free to shop here and browse for what you need, but note that they don’t have everything there!

Tips:

  • Make sure to top up your digital wallets and cards when you shop here. They don’t accept cash.
  • In case you’re in a big rush, order what you need online and have the items placed for collection at this branch. Your orders should be ready within 2 hours. Also, they’ll do this free of charge!

Whenever my kids need new socks, there’s only one place I go and that’s Kawata House of Socks. It’s basically a sock lover’s paradise, packed with every style, size, colour, and fabric you can imagine on a sock (they’ve got you covered from heel to toe).

They’ve been the go-to sock specialists since 1989, and it’s not just me who swears by them; my dad’s a big fan too. He’s all about their funky designs and even surprises us with cool new pairs as gifts just because.

Tips:

  • Want to rock your own custom socks? You can design your perfect pair by choosing the base style, fabric, colour, and logo. Once your design is set, they will craft and deliver them to your address within 6 to 8 weeks.

Just be sure to finalise your order online and drop them an email for any special requests.

  • Don’t miss out on their special collections during major holidays of the year like Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and more. Tune in to their Instagram page for more info and the latest updates.

Do you have a taste for fine wine? Then you will love Wine Connection, where bottles from around the world are just waiting to be uncorked.

As one of Southeast Asia’s biggest wine and restaurant chains, they know their stuff. At this outlet, you can grab a signature bottle (or two) to take home.

But if wine isn’t your only vice, they also offer cheese, cured meats, sake, beer, and spirits to keep your shopping cart interesting. Cheers!

Tips:

  • If you’re serious about wine and spirits, the store actually hosts a myriad of fairs, tasting sessions, and workshops. They regularly post events they host on this page
  • Don’t miss out on their flower gift set if you are buying a gift for a special someone. They have a select collection of wine you can pair with a bouquet. Check them all out on this page.

If you appreciate fine ingredients in your cooking, stock up on gourmet delights from Aroma Truffle. Specialising in Italian truffles, this shop offers truffle-infused snacks, condiments, and small gourmet treats you can give as gifts.

One of my favourite items here is the black summer truffle chips in original and smoked hickory. They’re a tad bit pricey for a snack, but they’re buttery, crispy, savoury, and just so satisfying (especially if you don’t come across truffles every day).

Tips:

  • Sending a gift from Aroma Truffle? You can include a personalised message (up to 150 characters) at checkout, and they’ll print it on a stylish Aroma Truffle postcard to go with your order!
  • The shop is currently renewing its halal certification, but its products remain free from non-halal ingredients. They mainly use black summer truffles, except for their white truffle oil which contains white truffles.

If you have any questions or concerns about their ingredients, don’t hesitate to ask the staff members.

Peach Garden may be known for fine dining, but their casual Chinatown Point outlet lets you savour their signature dishes without the hefty price tag.

Don’t be fooled by the “casual” label, though, because the ambience still oozes elegance and the service is top-notch. This is where my family indulges in Peking duck, crispy salted egg pumpkin, and rich braised shark’s fin with crab and scallop.

Fancy flavours minus the fancy bill. What’s not to love?

Tips:

  • Want to secure your preferred time and group size? I highly recommend booking your tables early.

Special requests aren’t guaranteed (if you have dietary restrictions) and depend on availability, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment. You can book a table here

  • The restaurant also offers High Tea Buffets every Saturday and Sunday if you want to spend the afternoon snacking on their signature dishes in small portions. Wash down your meal with pots of quality tea. Click here to learn more!

Who can resist a trip to the world-famous, Michelin-starred Din Tai Fung? Not me! Every time I swing by Chinatown Point, I make it a mission to indulge in their legendary xiao long bao.

But the dumplings are just the beginning. Think slurp-worthy noodles, flavorful seafood, and perfectly cooked pork and beef dishes that are absolutely worth the wait.

And here’s a bonus: you get a front-row seat to the bao-making magic as soon as you step inside.

Tips:

  • The queue here always gets long during lunch (12:00 pm to 1:00 pm) and dinner (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm) hours. I highly recommend saving your appetite for an early or late lunch to beat the crowds and long queue. If the crowd is still sizeable during your visit, you can always order for takeout!
  • If you ordered hot tea, don’t worry about running out. The attentive staff will keep your cup full with refills. If you don’t want any more, just cover the rim of your cup with your hand.

Wok Hey

If you’re craving a hearty, wallet-friendly Asian stir-fry, Wok Hey is a must-try. This no-fuss takeout kiosk serves wok-fried dishes, cooked fresh right before your eyes.

It’s also one of the best halal-friendly eats in the mall, making it a great pick for those with dietary restrictions. From egg and Shanghai fried rice to cauliflower rice and even Japanese favourites like udon and ramen, they’ve got something to satisfy you!

Tips:

  • Ordering at Wok Hey is super easy. Just scan the QR code, customise your meal—go for brown rice, extra veggies, your choice of protein, or tweak the oil levels—then pay online. Once that’s done, the staff will get straight to cooking your order fresh on the spot.
  • If you really need to skip the wait, I recommend ordering online in advance and picking up your orders from the stall. Since they cook your food on the spot and there are no seated waiting areas, you might be standing for a long time when there’s a queue!

What’s a visit to Chinatown without a few hours spent at a hot pot place? If you are in the area, I recommend trying out the spicy and numbing broths and plethora of toppings at Wu Wang Guo Hot Pot.

This hot pot place is also very popular during the Chinese New Year season, and my parents try not to miss out on a chance to chow on the hot pot during the festivities. The choice of meat, seafood, broths, and sides makes every penny spent here worth it.

Tips:

  • Want to get the most back for your buck? For just an extra $4, you can enjoy unlimited sauces, cold appetisers like marinated cucumber, peanuts, and bean curd skin, as well as fruits and ice cream. Come hungry!
  • Leave a Google review and score a free beef platter! The portions are surprisingly generous, so it’s definitely worth the few extra minutes.

Victor’s Kitchen

Another Chinese restaurant worth visiting in the mall is Victor’s Kitchen. This casual and family-friendly restaurant is known for its dumplings, buns, and noodle dishes, which are popular comfort food for many residents and regulars in Chinatown.

My personal favourites are the golden egg yolk lava custard buns, steamed carrot cake, dumplings, and prawn dumplings. I could go here for a snack or a very hearty lunch or dinner any time of the week (if I only lived a little closer).

Tips:

  • If you’re dining here, be sure to have plenty of water on hand. The food is quite salty, and I suspect there’s a good amount of MSG in the mix. I found myself reaching for water constantly after my meal.
  • Heads up: you’ll need to order and pay at the counter before your food is served. The staff here includes some elderly folks, so service might be a little slower, but they make up for it with their warmth and proactive attitude.

Kohaku Sabo

Address:  New Bridge Rd, 133 L2, #02-34
Contact Details: +65 6443 4366
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Pricing: $$

Kohaku Sabo is one of those places that feels like a little escape from the bustle of Chinatown Point. I first stumbled upon it while craving something hearty yet comforting, and their half-and-half set quickly became my go-to meal here.

There’s something about the perfect balance of crispy tempura over fluffy rice and the creamy mentaiko udon. The real showstopper here, though, is the sweet potato brulee which reminds me of delicious steamed sweet potatoes my grandma used to make.

Tips:

  • Note that the restaurant only accepts walk-ins, so if you want to ensure you get a table here, come during their off-hours, which are from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

They have a small break between 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, so if you really want to get a seat, I recommend queuing before they reopen in the late afternoon.

  • For a fun twist on dessert, you’ll get a little brush to paint the cat pudding yourself! Just go easy on the syrup. It’s quite sweet, so you might want to adjust it to your taste.
