I never knew how much fun glass decal art could be until I tried a workshop at The Cozy Cabin. I got to choose from floral designs to quirky custom ones and was able to personalise it further with mix-and-match (and even layered) effects.

The glassware provided at the workshops is high-quality, too. They’re not flimsy breakable ones, so I was able to design and create my glass decals with confidence.

Pro-tip: Weekends tend to fill up with bigger groups. Enroll on weekdays for a more relaxed, hands-on experience with extra guidance from instructors.

Living in a small HDB unit means being extra careful about choosing the furniture and decor I have to live with for a long time. Thankfully, Tombalek’s woodworking workshop allowed me to experiment with personalised furniture pieces I can be proud to call mine.

I learned how to select the perfect wood grain and then shape and finish a small side table since the entire process is hands-on. It wasn’t as intimidating as I thought it would be, given the professional-grade tools and fully equipped workshop.

Pro-tip: Take your woodworking skills a notch higher by learning how to custom engrave your pieces!

Store-bought is fine, but a bit of handcrafted cuteness goes a long way in making someone feel extra special. Sage Artelier’s plushie-making workshop helped me create a one-of-a-kind plushie for my niece, and now it’s her favourite toy!

I was taught to sketch my design, choose fabrics and colours, hand-stitch, stuff, and even add tiny details like embroidery and beaded accessories. Every step is beginner-friendly and the patient instructors will guide you through the process.

Pro-tip: Expect two to three hours to finish a simple-shaped plushie, though the more complex and bigger the design, the longer it will take.

Craft Atelier

I always thought weaving and knitting looked complicated, but Craft Atelier broke down the process for me into simple, easy steps. The studio itself is cosy and has a timeless, creative vibe.

I was impressed with the variety of quality yarns and looms available, which meant experimenting with lots of textures, colours, and patterns. I’m now a proud owner of a colourful knitted scarf!

Pro-tip: For first-time weavers, start with a simple project like a wall hanging or coaster until you get comfy with the loom.

I’m familiar with the versatility of polymer clay, but it was only at BeadtleSweet’s workshop that I got to create something I think is worth selling. I was set to join a crafts bazaar and wanted to offer unique polymer earrings in the shape of food items.

I managed to do that, and then some! The instructor guided me through shaping, detailing, and baking my creations. I learned how to make custom colours, add textures, and even embed tiny details for a realistic touch.

Pro-tip: Make sure to stick around for the workshop’s finishing techniques to make your pieces more durable and polished.

Everyone knows how expensive handcrafted leather accessories can be. Thank goodness for Crafune’s leather crafting workshops because I learned how to cut, burnish, stitch, and emboss my leather goods.

It’s great that I could fully personalise my pieces, as I got to choose the leather type and thread colour, and even add custom initials. I’m proud to say that my wallet and coin purse came out professional-looking and classy!

Pro-tip: Always keep your fingers clear of the cutting edge and use a firm grip when handling sharp tools.

Resin Play + ArtPlay Haus

To be honest, I wasn’t keen on trying out resin art because of the potential fumes involved. However, there’s no denying how beautiful and whimsical resin pieces can be, especially when they’re both functional and ornamental.

The process is quite mesmerising, too. I got to swirl pigments, embed dried flowers and gold flakes, and work with a variety of moulds, colours, and finishes to come up with a pretty coaster set for my mom.

Pro-tip: Wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated spot when mixing resin to avoid inhaling fumes.

Concrete Everything

I wasn’t so sure about getting into concrete art because I’ve always associated the material with engineering and construction. Plus, I wasn’t confident the result would dry on time for me to take it home after the workshop.

But Concrete Everything taught me to experiment with textures and colours and add marbling effects, terrazzo chips, and sleek finishes to my pieces. I got to sculpt a planter and even mixed, moulded and tinted it to make it look anything but industrial.

Pro-tip: Expect the workshop to run for around three hours, so there’s enough time for mixing, moulding, and curing.

The Sundowner

Best for bean-to-bar chocolate making

Location: 705A E Coast Road

Contact: +6592495400

Hours: Saturdays, 2–4 PM

Price: $$

Stuffing my face with chocolate is easy enough, but I wanted to understand the process it took before I bought and consumed some. Enrolling at The Sundowner’s bean-to-bar chocolate-making workshop was an eye-opener.

We got to work with ethically sourced cacao beans, roast and grind them, then temper them to produce unique flavours we made ourselves. The experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the art and pride to have created a chocolate bar from scratch.

Pro-tip: Let your handmade chocolate set properly for the best texture. A week is enough for peak freshness and flavour.

Pei Lin Crafts

Best for tingkat painting with Nyonya artist

Location: 7500A Beach Rd, B1-302 The Plaza

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Daily, 10 AM–10 PM

In Peranakan culture, tingkat is a metal tool used to create intricate floral or batik designs on various surfaces. Painting with it has always intrigued me so I decided to sign up at Pei Lin Crafts to be guided by a skilled Nyonya artist.

There’s cultural storytelling woven into each of the artists’ brushstrokes as he demonstrated traditional motifs and techniques for us.

I’m glad I got to witness the process behind this legacy even though I have a long way to go to come up with something worth displaying.

Pro-tip: To make a lasting functional keepsake and vibrant design, use a durable enamel surface for your tingkat painting.

Kintsugi Art Studio

Best for the Japanese art of repair

Location: 2 Fowlie Rd, #01-07 Sycamore Tree

Contact: +6598595349

Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM–6 PM

Price: $$

Website

I broke one of my mom’s cherished vases and didn’t have the funds to replace it, so I did the next best thing: enroll at Kintsugi Art Studio’s repair classes. I never thought it would end up being a meditative and rewarding process.

I love its philosophy—rather than hiding flaws, embrace them and give new life to what others would discard. Guided by ancient Japanese techniques, I was able to mend the broken ceramic pieces with lacquer and gold and make them whole and more beautiful.

Pro-tip: Expect to pay upwards of S$80 for a class, depending on the size and materials to be used. Authentic gold dust options may cost more.
